However, through experience playing the games, I’ve noticed that no matter what responses you choose Nancy to say in dialogue, you always end up with the same clues.

However, during the game play, gamers feel like they have the choice to somewhat change the procedure of the game because they can choose what Nancy says and does. While the whole game isn’t based around conversations, they do significantly help you progress through the game. Advancing through the conversations with the characters in the game is necessary for Nancy to solve the mystery, because each character gives her valuable information and clues. While you cannot type in commands or your answers/questions, you have to choose around 1-5 different choices for what you (Nancy) will say in the conversation.

Nancy Drew computer games are text-based, in that they are structured by a series of dialogues that lead you to the next stage in the game. Each character has a quality or advantage that helps you solve different pieces of the puzzle. Since I’ve played Nancy Drew for many years, I’ve noticed this element is only present in the more recent games, expanding how you can explore the (constrained) virtual world and what character you can play as. By doing this, the gamer can then momentarily change their play character to her boyfriend Ned, her friends Bess and George, and more. In a small number of games, Nancy can call her friends on her cell phone and tell them to “Pass the case over to them”. For each game, you are given a set “world” you can explore, and all the clues you need lie there, so you do not need to venture outside of this world (and physically can’t do this as well). There is no “free” play, because you have to follow a particular pattern and find particular clues to finish the game and solve the mystery.Ī characteristic of all of the games is that Nancy can interact with several objects and people in the game and explore the world given to you. The gamer plays as Nancy (for the most part), and you are constrained to the places you can go, the people you can talk to, what you say to the people you talk to (even though you have a few response options to pick from), and more.

Yeah, I’m in college, but I still play and replay some of my Nancy Drew games every so often. We got so into these games that we would split money to buy the newest one that came out and sit for hours trying to solve the mysteries. In middle school, I started showing a couple of my other friends the Nancy Drew games, and we would play together when they came over to my house. It was called “ The Haunted Carousel”, and I first played it on my iMac desktop computer with my friend Gabby.Įver since I first played one of these games, I was hooked. I got my first Nancy Drew computer game when I was in 6th grade.
